Laser Hair Removal

Craving smooth skin without the headaches of razor burn or waxing appointments? Get unsightly hair gone for good with a painless, safe laser hair removal treatment at New Look Houston.

At New Look Houston, we use the highest quality laser hair removal technology to safely and effectively remove unwanted body hair, in both large and small areas. It’s painless, permanent and as an added bonus, leaves behind softer, more supple skin.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive and each hair is removed in a fraction of a second. It selectively targets dark, coarse hairs without damaging your skin and can be used on large areas, such as legs or the back. Laser hair removal can be done on almost any area of the body where you want to remove or reduce hair growth. Commonly treated areas include legs, underarms, bikini line, back, face, and upper lip. The procedure is cleared by the FDA.

New Look Houston offers Candela’s laser technology, the most effective and safest device available. This device uses two laser systems to remove hair more effectively and also blasts cool air to reduce any chance of potential discomfort. Dramatic and permanent results can be achieved after only a few treatments.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser emits an invisible light which penetrates the skin without damaging it. At the hair follicle, the laser light absorbed by the pigments is converted into heat. This heat will damage the follicle.

Unlike Electrolysis, which uses a needle and electrical currents, laser hair removal is gentler on your body and produces minimal side effects.

The laser emits an invisible light which penetrates the skin without damaging it. At the hair follicle, the laser light absorbed by the pigments is converted into heat. Repetition of this process will eventually stop the hair from growing.

Laser hair removal works quickly in the scheme of things – remind yourself that you’re never going to have to shave or wax again – but it typically takes a se

ries of sessions. Laser hair removal works on actively growing hair, so seven to nine sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart, are typically required to completely remove the hair follicles.

Will it work on me?

Yes! Laser hair removal can work on anyone. However, certain procedures work better on types of hair and skin tones. The technology is based on melanin, the dark color pigments, in hair, so dark hairs contrasting with light skin will have the most dramatic results in the shortest amount of time.

How long does it take?

How long a laser hair removal treatment take depends on the size of the treatment area. A session can take just a few minutes or several hours. After your treatment, you will be encouraged to avoid direct sun exposure for several weeks. After six to eight weeks, you can return for a follow-up treatment. This will continue until all new hair growth has stopped, typically in as few as three or as many as six treatments.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal is the least painful hair removal procedure on the market, with levels of discomfort far below the pain felt with electrolysis, waxing, or even a bad razor burn. During the laser hair removal session, most clients say the feel a slight stinging sensation. After the session, your skin may be slightly red and irritated. Although side effects are rare, some patients can experience blisters, swelling, redness and scarring. Slight scarring or alterations in skin color are also possible, but infrequent. Clients with darker skin tend to experience a higher rate of complications.

All pricing is for a package. Each package includes 6 treatment sessions.

Consultation:

Typically a consultation and treatment can happen on the same day. During the consultation your technician will decide if you are an appropriate candidate by looking at your skin color and hair follicle. If so, the technician will explain the process of the treatments and the proper aftercare steps to take to ensure effective results. If you have followed the pretreatment directions and everything checks out we can treat you the same day!

Treatment:
Pre Treatment:
  • Patient must be cleanly shaven in all treatment areas on the day of treatment.
  • The patient cannot have bleached, waxed, threaded or plucked the hair in areas to be treated within four weeks of appointment.
  • No depilatory (cream, gel, or foam hair removal product) can be used for 2 weeks prior to appointment.
  • Patient must avoid intense sun exposure (includes tanning beds, incidental sun, spray tans & self-tanners) 2 weeks before and one week
    after treatment.
  • The patient cannot have had a microdermabrasion, chemical peel, or another laser treatment within two weeks of appointment.
  • Patients cannot be taking antibiotics or any medication that is photosensitive
  • The patient cannot have used prescription topical Benzoyl Peroxide Medications or Retinoids (such as Retin-A or Renova) 3 days prior or
    less
  • The patient cannot have taken Accutane within 6 months of treatment.
  • Patients cannot be pregnant or nursing.
Post Treatment:
  • MOISTURIZE: After hair treatment, moisturize the treated area at least three times daily for three to four days. This will reduce
irritation and minimize the chances of folliculitis.
  • BE GENTLE: Avoid bathing in hot water (bath or hot tub) or swimming (pools and ocean) for at least three days. Take only short, cool or
lukewarm showers and DO NOT scrub the area. After showering, gently pat the area dry and avoid rubbing with your towel.
  • NO SUN: Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds! Wear a sun block with an SPF 45 or higher every time you are outside.
  • NO IRRITANTS: Avoid irritants such as astringents, toners, Retin-A (or other prescription retinoids or OTC retinols), harsh soaps,
medicated washes, scrubs, peels, and other exfoliates for at least one week after your treatment. DO NOT scrub/rub the area.
  • NO PLUCKING: After hair reduction treatments, do not pluck or pick at hairs that are in the process of falling out. Let the hairs fall
out naturally (this will happen over the next five to 15 days).
Other Notes:
  • FOR DISCOMFORT: If you experience redness, swelling, or minor burns/crusting, apply cool ice packs to the treated area, on and
off, every three to five minutes for one to two hours (do not apply ice pack for more than five minutes at a time). You can also apply the
Post Laser Cream, Vaseline, or Aquaphor to the affected area up to three times a day until it resolves.
  • FOR ITCHING and/or SWELLING: If you experience itchiness and/or swelling you may take liquid Benadryl, Allegra or Claritin (available
over-the-counter) as needed for up to three days. Liquid Benadryl, Allegra or Claritin can also be taken before your next appointment.
Also apply the Elta MD Post Laser Cream twice daily for three days. You may also apply Vaseline or Aquaphor.
  • FOR MICROCRUSTING: Do NOT rub or scrub the area. Simply apply Vaseline or Aquaphor and contact us for more info.
  • TIMING: For hair removal only: Hair grows in three stages (anagen, catagen and telogen) and is most susceptible to hair reduction in the
anagen phase. Weʼll let you know when you should return for your next treatment based on the area you are having treated.
  • GOALS: Remember that your goal is improvement, not perfection. Fine hairs, blonde hairs, “peach fuzz”, red hair, white hair and grey hair
will likely never go away completely with hair reduction treatments and not all signs of photo-aging will completely disappear with
treatment. Additionally, hair may return in the future and you may need “touch up” or “maintenance” treatments.
  • FACIAL and NECK HAIR: Facial hair and neck hair results can be challenging – If you have hair that is not responding to treatments we may
recommend that you see your primary care physician to have your hormone levels checked. Some hair will never go away completely but can be
reduced and maintained with an occasional treatment.
How does laser hair removal work?

The Lasers safely remove unwanted facial and body hair by selectively targeting melanin (pigment) inside the hair follicle, generating energy in the form of heat at the root of the hair, and destroying the hair without damaging the skin.

How many treatments do I need?

Due to the staggered nature of the hair growth cycle, with some hairs actively growing while others are dormant, laser hair removal requires multiple treatments to catch each hair as it enters the “active” growth phase. The number of laser hair removal treatments necessary for complete hair removal varies from person to person. Most patients require 6-12 hair removal treatments, spread out between 4-6 week intervals. It is important to attend every appointment in your treatment plan to ensure the best results

How long will the procedure take?

GentleMAX Pro produce an 18mm spot size (about the size of a quarter). This larger spot size coupled with more hertz (power), means a faster and more effective treatment. Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat multiple hairs at the same time. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as fullback or full legs can take from to 45 minutes to an hour on average.

Is it safe?

Laser treatments are extremely safe. Our lasers are FDA approved and use the most advanced technology to deliver the safest treatment. All of our technicians are experts in Laser Hair Removal they are fully certified, with up to date training and have a great deal of experience with providing treatments to fit your needs.

Am I a candidate for Laser hair removal?

For the vast majority of people, the answer is YES! We can treat women and men of all ethnicities and skin types. Lasers are attracted to the pigment of the hair, so if you have white, red, light blonde or fine vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) unfortunately, treatments would be ineffective.
As a general rule; the best results are achieved by those with thick dark hair and light skin but our Gentle MaxPro is optimized for each individual’s unique skin type and thereby offers safe and permanent results for virtually all skin tones and hair thicknesses

Do I have to let the hair grow out first?

No. In fact, the less hair there is on the surface the better. We want as much of the laser’s energy as possible to go down to the follicle where it is needed instead of just concentrating on what hair is visible on the surface. You should attend your appointment with the intended treatment area clean shaven. Making sure the intended treatment area clean shaven will make the treatment less painful and far more effective.

It is very important that you do not tweeze, wax, use depilatory creams such as Nair or Veet, or use bleaching creams at least 4 weeks prior to your first appointment.

Is Laser hair removal safe when pregnant or nursing?

While there is no known risk we do not offer laser hair removal when pregnant or nursing as an extra precaution.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

Yes! We have two distinct layers: one for lighter skin, and one for darker skin.

No matter how dark the skin, our GentleMax Pro YAG laser is considered the gold standard for treating unwanted hair on darker skin types.

Its longer wavelength safely bypasses the skin and targets the melanin in the hair shaft, destroying the unwanted hair follicle or roo without damaging the pigmentation of the skin.

Can you still help me if I have electrolysis or other laser treatments in the past?

Yes, if you still have unwanted hair in the area that was treated then we are happy to offer a laser hair removal treatment plan.

We have helped many clients who have not had the ability to withstand painful electrolysis, as well as those who have not had positive results with other types of laser systems.

Will freckles moles or tattoos be damaged if they are in the treatment area?

Our technicians have the ability to adjust the laser intensity for areas that have moles and/or freckles.
It is not possible to treat areas with existing tattoos as it will affect the ink, if you are considering Laser Hair removal and a tattoo then please visit us before getting a tattoo!

Since Microblading & permanent eyebrows and/or lip liner are considered tattoos, please inform us if you have any of this so we can adjust the lasers near those areas.

Is Laser hair removal painful or uncomfortable?

You may experience a small but manageable sensation that we describe as a “pinch” or a “zap” when we pulse the laser. The DCD (Dynamic Cooling Device) that our lasers are equipped with eliminates the need for any topical numbing preparations. Before every laser pulse, cryogen (cooling agent) is automatically sprayed onto the skin within the laser field that protects and partially numbs that area. This makes the treatment safer and more comfortable. Stress, fatigue, caffeine, your menstrual cycle, and pain tolerance may also influence the level of comfort — or discomfort — that you feel. We have a topical cream that is prescribed by our physician for those who are sensitive to pain.

Most of our former waxing, stringing and electrolysis clients report that the discomfort is far less than those methods of hair removal.

Are there any side effects?

With Laser Hair Removal risks are minimal. There is no recovery or downtime so patients can return to their normal activities immediately. After the treatment, you may experience a slight reddening of the skin similar to a sunburn that will resolve within a few hours to days. In certain instances (especially in patients with darker complexions) temporary pigment changes may occur but will disappear within a month.

What should I know following my laser hair removal treatment

Immediately following your treatment, and for two weeks after your session, you should avoid unprotected sun exposure. If you have to go out into the sun, then you will need to apply sunscreen with Zinc, 20 SPF, or higher. Clients continuing laser hair removal treatments need to refrain from waxing and/or tweezing as a hair removal option.
While receiving laser treatments, please shave to remove remaining hair in between laser sessions. Over the course of your treatments, the hair will start to grow back less frequently, thinner and sparse. At least two weeks after each session the hair may start to shed on its own, releasing the follicle.

Am I allowed to tan?

While getting treated for laser hair removal we ask you to avoid all types of tanning.
This includes tanning outside, tanning beds, spray tans, and tanning injections. If you have tanned recently we want you to wait at least two weeks before your next treatment. The reason for this is because the laser is attracted to pigment. And rather than the laser picking up the pigment of the hair, there is a risk that it will pick up the extra pigment on the skin, resulting in a burn.

What if I have excessive hair growth?

While the vast majority of patients achieve outstanding results from laser hair removal, people with excessive hair growth particularly in unusual areas may want to explore any possible underlying medical conditions prior to receiving laser hair removal. Men may experience excessive growth due to undiagnosed insulin resistance whereas women with male-pattern facial hair may want to see an endocrinologist to rule out any possibility of PCOS, Hirsutism, or elevated testosterone levels. Laser hair removal can only destroy hair that’s currently growing. For example, Our Laser Technician may treat an area and effectively destroy all of the hair that was growing at the time of treatment, yet a patient may grow new hair (though this is usually just a few strands) due to hormonal changes that trigger new growth from previously dormant follicles such as pregnancy and menopause. Laser hair removal does not stop your body from developing new hair from dormant follicles due to medical conditions after treatments are completed.

The following are potential causes of excessive hair growth:

  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Glandular and/or hormonal imbalances
  • PCOS
  • Insulin resistance
  • Thyroid problems
  • Reactions to certain medications
  • Steroid use

The majority of people, even with a medical condition, are treatable and can achieve great results permanently removing their unwanted body hair. Diagnosing a medical condition prior to treatment will help us at New Look Houston to treat you more effectively and better explain to you what to expect before, during, and after treatment.

Can I get treated if I have an STD/herpes?

Yes, you can get treated. We ask you to inform us of your new patient paperwork when you come in for your consultation. If you have the herpes simplex virus, antiviral therapy can be started 1-2 days before treatment and continued for 1-week post-treatment to help prevent an outbreak. If you do have an outbreak we ask you to reschedule your appointment.

Are the results permanent?

Results vary depending on skin and hair type. Many patients can achieve hair reduction of up to 85-90% and remaining hair returns lighter and softer. Results vary depending on the patient. However, there have been some studies have shown a hair can go dormant for a few years and then start to grow again the results vary person to person.

Unfortunately, taking before and afters of laser hair removal is useless. It’s the same as taking a picture of someone before and after a shave. It’s not going to show you how well the treatment actually works.
