With the new year comes the desire to re-evaluate habits and routines and often the want to implement new ones, the skin is so frequently one of the last things we think about when it comes to new year resolutions, even in the age of the selfie.
While there is no doubt that everyone wants that glowing, no filter required flawlessly smooth skin. Sometimes it may take you a little searching to figure out exactly what the right skin treatment is, to achieve this, whether you are looking to minimize or rid your skin of textural issues, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines, or even a combination of all of the above.
With so many options out there, the question is; what beauty treatment would be the most effective for you and your skin goals?
You’ve probably heard of microneedling, and like most, you might be wondering what exactly it is, how it can benefit your skin and what exactly the process is?
Then you’ve come to the right post.
So What is Microneedling?
From the name itself, it’s probably pretty obvious that this treatment involves needles but what exactly do they do, and why?
Here is how it works, whenever there is an injury (even micro) to the skin, the body sends collagen and elastin directly to that area as a way to improve the skin’s strength and elasticity in that area to promote healing and a new fresh layer of skin.
The goal is to create micro injuries on your face and neck in order to instigate the production of new collagen and elastin in areas where it may be lacking, if you have dull skin, textural issues or scarring in particular from acne the result is an improvement of the overall skin appearance and texture.
Reducing fine lines is another great benefit of micro needling, giving you a younger looking skin. Once the collagen production is induced, the rejuvenation and repair of your skin take place. The end result is smoother, brighter healthier skin.
At New Look Houston the Skin Pen is our choice for all of our micro-needling treatments. the Skin Pen Microneedling treatments are most commonly performed on the face and neck creating a controlled series of micro-injuries in the dermis. If you have even a slight fear of needles there’s no need to worry the needles themselves aren’t the conventional ones. They are super tiny, with a length as small as 0.5mm to 5.0mm.
Why We use the Skin Pen:
While there are quite a few other devices out there for micro-needling the reason we use the Skin Pen specifically, is that in comparison to other devices, it is actually known to be the safest and kindest to your skin, minimizing any cellular damage.
While rejuvenation occurs, the overall structure of the skin remains intact. in simple terms the skin repair is induced by the tiny injuries, to eliminate acne scars and fine lines, but without causing any damage. If Microneedling caused damage to the skin then it would be pointless.
As one of Houston’s longest standing and leading medspa’s, we would never damage our client’s skin; this is why when it comes to microneedling the Skin Pen is our first and only choice. There is also the added assurance of knowing that the Skin Pen has been FDA approved and proven safe for use on the skin.
Versatility is another a great aspect of the Skin pen. The size and manageability mean it can be used on various parts of the body like the face, neck, back, abdomen, legs, and hands. Because the Skin Pen is lightweight, wireless and ergonomically friendly. It makes the ease of use possible around a variety of narrow areas like the nose. It is also easy to use for improving the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, wrinkles, and under eye-bags.
The needles on the skin pen can be adjusted in length. Making it possible to create tailored specific micro-wounds depending on the condition of the skin area.
Advantages of Skin Pen Microneedling:
You may have heard of or seen other methods of micro needling. A manual stamping device or a roller device can be used to carry out the Collagen induction procedure. The issue with these devices is that the depth of the needling created is inconsistent. So in turn results can be inconsistent or very minimal. Patients who have undergone microneedling with these devices have reported pain. With the Skin Pen, our clients have found treatments to be comfortable with minimal pain and consistent in its results.
The Skin Pen micro-needling treatment is natural, matched against other skin treatments which make use of chemicals, this skin treatment using a Skin pen to create tiny injuries in your skin leads to elastin and collagen production for natural healing and rejuvenation. Your skin’s youthful look is restored naturally.
The Skin pen delivers consistent micro-wounds as set by the professional. This makes the procedure a lot more effective.
The treatment is completely safe. It does not damage the skin nor cause scars. In our experience, there are little to no side effects. It is comfortable and does not expose your skin to infections since the wounds created can be effectively controlled. The redness and slight swelling/bleeding aftermath of the procedure vanish quickly. Usually within a few hours to 2 days.
The Skin Pen needle cartridges are disposable and single-use sterile to ensure your safety every time.
A Clearer Picture of How Microneedling Works
While we have mentioned the fact that micro-injuries bring about the formation of new collagen for skin rejuvenation. You might find it interesting to really understand how the process really works.
So here is a better idea of what we are really talking about. Yes, the very tiny wounds bring encourage the skin to repair itself but what does the repair process entail?
Firstly, creating micro-injuries on your skin allows the immune system to go to work purifying the wounds, creating new tissues and increasing blood flow to such areas. This could be referred to as inflammation, that is, a reaction to an injury formation. New blood vessels are formed and the micro-wounds are re-built with the formulation of new cells so your skin is regenerated.
Thirdly, the rejuvenation takes place. The tiny wounds are replaced by new blood vessels and Dermal tissues. Resulting in a renewed and younger looking skin.
Micro-needling is highly beneficial and straight forward. So it’s no wonder that it has become a favorite among Medspa clients. While the above are the most common benefits, there are a lot more than just removing acne scars, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.
While some of the benefits are clear and common knowledge there are actually more which might help you to decide if Microneedling is right for you.
Added Benefits of Microneedling
You most likely have an idea of what exfoliation entails. In simple terms, it is the removal of the very upper layer or surface of the skin. It is good because it removes dead skin cells, impurities and dirt. Thereby, giving the appearance of a brighter and younger looking skin also allowing the skin to better absorb your skincare so that you get the maximum benefits from your skincare.
Even Skin Tone
A really appealing benefit of micro-needling is that it evens out the skin tone. Microneedling is proven to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the underlying color of the skin is different from the surrounding color i.e. they do not match. Micro-needling can minimize this problem by boosting the matrix metalloproteinases appearance; an enzyme that is expressed during wound healing.
The procedure also helps even the skin tone by balancing melanin; a dark or brown pigment occurring in the skin. Once the melanin production is balanced, skin color is generally more even toned.
Enhances Skin Texture
It is very common to start to notice the signs of aging over time and one of the most noticeable tends to be when the skin has started to sag and loses its vibrancy. This is as a result of the natural slowing of elastin and collagen production. Micro-needling promotes the production of new collagen and elastin at a rate that the skin might no longer be producing anymore. This leads to an improvement in the strength and elasticity of the skin. giving you back that plump fresh looking skin.
In addition to this, the production of new collagen reduces the appearance of pore size. This way, you develop a smoother skin texture. In reality, virtually immediately after the procedure, you can literally notice that your skin texture feels soft and enhanced.
A Glowing Fresh Appearance
Micro-needling can be used for so many skin concerns such as under eye bags, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, skin textural issues, Microneedling results in smoother skin; your skin, therefore, appears younger. if you are over the age of 40, micro-needling might just be one of the easiest solutions to achieving a younger looking skin.
What you should Expect from a Skin Pen Microneedling Treatment
Depending on the area for treatment Microneedling treatments usually, take 30 minutes to an hour.
To ensure there is little to no pain during the treatment a topical numbing cream is applied on your face to numb the area where micro needling will be performed.
The topical numbing cream minimizes the pain from the needling. Making you comfortable during your sessions. The combination of benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT) is effective in minimizing the pain from the Skin pen. While rejuvenation starts immediately and continues even after leaving the medspa, results become evident in about 6 to 12 months. This is because the inducement of collagen production takes some time.
The recommended number of sessions will depend on the condition of the skin, with the standard treatment plan being 3 to 5 sessions within a duration of 4 to 6 weeks. with sessions repeated every 6 to 9 months are advised to maintain the results.
Professional Microneedling vs. At Home Microneedling
While the idea of potentially performing a treatment yourself at home v.s going to a professional can be really appealing, it can cheaper, you can do it in your own time and if you feel confused there is always google.
But the reality is there is usually a lot more to a treatment procedure than it might seem and without the correct training you can actually cause damage to your skin without trying to or even realizing you are, so seeking a trained professional is safer, more effective and guarantees better results.
Microneedling is no exception, the at home device that isn’t as strong and regulated as a professional Microneedling device, that paired without the proper training to perform the treatment (it’s always trickier to do something on yourself) its likely the needles may not have the length required to reach a depth sufficient for boosting collagen and elastin formation. In other words, while you may see results, they may not be as evident in comparison to when you go professional.
Professional treatments are performed based on the condition of the skin, the number of sessions required can only be prescribed by a trained esthetician, professional micro-needling session is always the best option to go for.
Is a Microneedling Treatment Suitable For You?
While Microneedling may have only recently become popular, it has been carried out for decades and is one of the safest treatments available.
The Skin Pen micro-needling procedure does not affect the epidermis responsible for the skin pigmentation, so it can be used for all skin types. There is very little that would stop you from being a great candidate.
It is important that you avoid for the following reasons if you have an active skin infection such as; rosacea or impetigo. Also, skins with hypersensitivity, acute eczema or sunburn should not undergo this beauty procedure. SkinPen is not recommended for pregnant women because the micro-needles produce micro-injuries on the skin, which naturally causes a repair process to begin. This healing process and production of new collagen require vitamins and nutrients to be utilized that would otherwise be reserved for the unborn child.
Other than this, pretty much anyone could go through micro-needling.
Micro-needling does not require a downtime regarding recovery. So it would not disrupt your schedule. So, if you are super busy but would still like to try micro needling, but you are wondering if you would have to wait for a long time for recovery before resuming your daily activities. You have nothing to worry about. The redness or slight bleeding often occurs for only a few hours.
Micro-needling is one of the best options when it comes to a safe, natural treatment with maximum results for all skin types. It is super effective for smoothing skin texture, brightening skin and minimizing scarring giving you younger looking skin without side effects.
Considering the many benefits, safety, and ease of a micro-needling treatment; I have to say it’s worth it to try micro-needling.
All of our consultations are free and our highly trained esthetician will perform a full skin analysis and then suggest the best treatment plan for you along with explaining the procedure and intended results and answer any questions you may have.
