You may be aware that one of the most important tips for caring for your skin while undergoing laser tattoo removal is keeping the treated skin away from direct sunlight. Too much UV ray exposure can slow the removal process and cause permanent scarring.

So what do you do when it’s summer time, you’re outside frequently, and you have skin that needs extra protection? It’s important to use the right kind of sunscreen.

Don’t just grab any sunscreen off the shelf. Not all sunscreens will give you the protection that you need.

There are two main types of sunscreen: physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens.

Physical sunscreens, often called “Sunblock” instead of “sunscreen” have titanium oxide or zinc oxide as their primary ingredient. These ingredients will physically block UV rays from the skin. Some of these sunscreens can be thick and chalky and difficult to completely rub in.

Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays and convert them to heat. This is a type of sunscreen that laser-treated skin, because those chemicals can irritate healing skin. The heat increase can also delay the healing process on the treated area.

It’s best to select a sunblock in the highest strength available for the treated tattoo and surrounding area. Although this may make it more difficult to rub in, it will help you avoid hyper-pigmentation’s lasting mark, scarring from sunburns and delays in healing.
