Why does it take multiple sessions to remove a tattoo?

One of the most frequent questions we get at New Look Houston is about the number of sessions it will take to remove a tattoo. It’s the unfortunate reality that removing a tattoo is a process and not a one-step treatment.

Tattoo ink may be applied in one session, but that application goes deep into multiple layers of skin. The lasers remove the tattoos layer by layer, which is why tattoos fade over a number of treatments instead of disappear instantly.

Lasers break up the tattoo ink pigment particles and these particles are then processed by your immune system. During each session, the laser breaks up ink into the smallest particles possible.

If your tattoo has shading, the shaded areas will vanish in fewer treatments because shaded tattoos have a lower ink density.

Knowing how many sessions it will take to remove your tattoo is a very individualized estimate. It depends on the age of the tattoo, colors involved, the size, the part of the body the tattoo is on, and how your individual immune system reacts to the treatment, which will only be apparent once the process begins.

Tattoos that have shading, such as this one, will see the shaded sections fade faster than the areas with dense tattoo ink.

Our experts at New Look Houston can give estimates based on your tattoo to help you calculate the cost and time it will take to remove your tattoo. Call 713-783-2000 for a free estimate!
